The process of opening Boston’s first cat cafe is more complicated than one might think, but we're making good progress, and we are hopeful that PURR will be open in early 2017!
The first major challenge to getting PURR up and running was finding the purr-fect location. We wanted to make sure we found a great place, so that as many cat lovers as possible would be able to come and visit us. We also discovered that many landlords don’t want to rent to a crazy cat lady who is planning on bringing in over a dozen equally crazy cats. (Crazy, right?)
We searched high and low, and we even offered a reward for anyone who could find a viable space for us. And then finally we found it: a wonderful landlord who is just as crazy as we are! We are thrilled to report that we have signed a lease and secured our location!
With our first major challenge conquered, we are now focusing on the next big hurdle: Red Tape.
Although our location is decided, we cannot announce it until we have completed the zoning and permitting processes necessary to open PURR. Because a cat cafe involves serving food in a space full of animals, the regulations for this business can be tricky. So we are proceeding carefully to make sure that we comply with all of the regulations and get all the necessary approvals.
Completing the zoning process is going to take some time (and a lot of paperwork!), but the good news is that both the Boston Board of Health and Mayor Walsh have told us that they are just as eager to see PURR open as we are!
In the meantime, we are continuing to work with our rescue partners, Boston’s Forgotten Felines, to navigate the best way to bring their rescue cats safely to PURR, so that you – our wonderful, cat-loving friends – can come visit and adopt them.
We are thrilled about the progress we have made so far towards opening the doors to PURR Cat Cafe, and we are continually working to progress even further. We cannot wait until next year, when we will be able to open the doors for you to visit us crazy hoomans and the coolest cats in town!
